Having an online business is so great.  Of course, you need to do the work, and you need to learn how to sell stuff online and make money doing it, so you get a paycheck.

You need a paycheck, so you can support your great lifestyle.  You can be your own boss.  You make your own hours.  You wear what you want.  You have the ability to make time for family, friends, and community activities, and to do your work – when it works for you.   You can go to the beach when the weather is good.

It goes hopefully almost without saying that having an online business means you will be doing a lot of work, especially when you are first getting started.

After 3 to 6 months, when you are getting traffic and income, you will be able to settle down so that you can do your business in a 20-hour work week.   In the beginning, putting in more hours will help shorten how long you wait until you are getting your paycheck.  If 20 hours is all you can do, it will take a bit longer to get things off the ground.

Just know you need to invest the time and the work to get things rolling.  Then it will take less of both to keep them on a roll.

Here are five key ideas I have been learning in the training I recommend

Your website or blog where you talk with your readers about what you want them to buy through you is where you connect with them.  It is where you build the trust with them, that will make them want to buy what you recommend.

What you write needs to communicate.  Your content has to play on their radio station.  It should have these four topics:

  • State the problem you want to solve.
  • Give a solution
  • Tell them the benefits of your offered solution
  • Give a call to action

In this post the problem that led you to read this post is “How To Sell Stuff Online and Make Money.”  Now that is one long-tail keyword!

You came here because you are interested in selling something online, or in starting your own online business.  Or you may have a website already, and you want to make it better.  Something about the Title led you to want to read this blog.

keywords and SEOKeywords Are Important

The search engines for the internet look for keywords.  My training has a great tool for finding keywords, called Squirrly…Squirrly not only helps find keywords, but also has tools to help you assess how effective yours are in the search engines.

The biggest search engine is Google.  Two other important but not as prominent ones are Yahoo and Bing.  Smart usage of keywords helps to optimize your website being found by the search engines.  Good keyword use leads to Search Engine Optimization or SEO.  

Use LongTail Keywords

A long tail keyword is one that contains lots of shorter phrases, too.  The keyword in this article is “How To Sell Stuff Online”.  It has shorter also much-searched keywords like How to Sell and Sell Stuff Online.

The fact that you came to find this article means my keyword use was optimized enough for you to find this post among the billions and trillions out there.

Use Relevant Images

Images help a reader navigate and get and stay engaged with your post.  Pictures speak a thousand words, right?  A picture that is relevant to your topic helps to communicate what you are saying.  It entertains and holds interest.

Pictures convey emotions, too.  A reader whose emotions are triggered will tend to stay with you.  An engaged reader may even take the action you are recommending.

Awkward phrasing to make a keyword work will not help your reader.  You need to find and use keywords that fit naturally within your content.  If you have awkward phrasing your content will fail to interest your reader and you will lose him or her.

The idea here has always got to be to serve the interests and the needs of your readers.  There is no other reason to have a post in your blog.  You're not going to sell any stuff online if you don't have a reader who reads what you have to say and then acts on your recommended solutions.

Images that have nothing to do with your content will only confuse.  Everything has to flow.

Use regular language.  You're not writing a treatise here.  You're having an online conversation.  You want your readers to get to know you, and to trust you.

And speaking of trust, never say anything you don't completely believe to be true.  Do your research.  Talk from your own mind and heart.  That way, you honor yourself and you honor your readers.

These are five key points I've been learning in my training.  I've added some of my own values to all of it, of course.  That makes it mine, with my own flavor.  That makes my content unique.

Putting your own stamp on your work will make yours unique, too.  It is what makes you stand out from everyone else.

    That is one thing I see many forget. They use keyword phrases that are not grammatically correct and makes little to no sense. A person ALWAYS needs to keep their reader in mind. These are all great ideas and worth remembering,

    • Hi Craig, I am glad to see you agree. I see that, too, all too often. Some may be writing in a second language, and that could be a reason, but mostly I think it is a clumsy way to try to get SEO and it doesn’t work for SEO nor does it work to interest our readers, which is primary.

That is the heart of our site. If we don’t have engaging, informative posts, there is no reason for a visitor to come to our site.
